Water guns? Dancers? Lube Wrestling? Crave.

This past weekend saw a stretch of intense partying for at least 2/3rds of your QPDX crew, so pardon us while we recover momentarily and start summing all of this weekend’s great events for you! Starting off the night on Friday was Portland’s newest lesbian dance night-CRAVE.

CRAVE - Dance Party at Crush

Crave - Monthly lesbian dance party at Crush

I had a chance to stop by on Friday and speak with some of the organizers, dancers and partiers in attendance, and if the clubgoers satisfaction is the best gauge of a party, then Crave is already a hit. Held at one of my favourite bars in Portland, Crush, Crave is a “stylish, fashionable, hip, themed dance party with lovely, sexy ladies, geared towards the 21-40 crowd who appreciate beautiful women”, according to organizer Mirage. And while the stated upper age limit of 40 is a bit high (I barely saw anybody into their 30’s), Crave delivers on the promise of themed nights, pumping dance music and enthusiastic dancers. “It’s a great party,” dancer Piper told me outside, “everyone is having fun, getting down. I love the vibe, it’s awesome”, and party attendees I spoke to echoed the same sentiments. “The music is pumpin,” my friend Byz said, ” The girls are hot, the drinks keep coming, it’s awesome.”

Trial set to begin in the murder or transgendered Angie (Justin) Zapata

Angie Zapata

The striking transwoman, Angela Zapata, was only 18 years old when Allen Andrade bludgeoned her to death with a fire extinguisher. The bias-motivated nature of this horrific crime could add 3 years to Andrade’s sentance when his trial begins this coming Tuesday.

From the Associated Press:

Andrade told investigators that he struck Zapata twice in the head with the extinguisher and thought he had “killed it” before hitting her again as she struggled to get up, an arrest affidavit said. The pair met through a mobile networking site and had spent the night…

Gay marriage is spreading across the (Colbert) nation

In honor of recent gay marriage happenings in Iowa and New York the indomitable satire man Stephen Colbert has created a pretty fantastic anti-gay marriage commercial that aired last night on his show.

I even learned 2 new amazing words: arma-gay-don and Gays-real. (Is Massachusetts P-town really our Mecca?)

Believe me this is 6 minutes of internet procrastination you won’t regret.

lube wrestling @ crave friday night, april 17th

There’s a lot going on tomorrow night! But there’s also lube wrestling. Wrestling drunk people all lubed up might be a little messy, but the owner of the bar assures me that the wrestling pit will be in a contained area. You will still be able to dance if wrestling isn’t your thing.

Crave, the monthly queer ladies dance party at Crush will feature three things dear to my […]

Competing events already…

Thursday nights are generally continual favorites in Portland. Few not exclusively gay clubs choose to regularly give up their weekend slots for queer events but Thursday is up for grabs and, really, you can make it through one more day…

This Thursday’s Booty: Portland’s queer party for the piratecore at Porky’s pub on North Lombard is a singles night. (The website hasn’t been updated for this event but trust me, it’s happening) And while I might generally be wary of such an themed evening Booty is probably the best up-and-coming queer weekly in town, so it’s definitely worth the trip up there on the Max. Be wary though, Booty is not so new that it hasn’t been discovered, so Porky’s tiny walls fill in fast after 10 o’clock hour.

The second event are local self-proclaimed “gayest band in the universe” T-ReXXXa with Cat Hole, at the E-Room (Egyptian Club), Portland’s only ladies dive. Apparently the first 25 folks to ask for it get a free Cat Hole CD. I cannot substantiate this rumor. Show is from 8-10, with dancing (surely?) afterword. But you can probably still scoot up to Booty at the show’s end if you’re intent on catching both nights. Because the E-room hasn’t updated their calendar either, you may begin to doubt the validity of my claims that these events are actually happening. Well, here’s the Craiglist post to prove it is. Beware as it contains a swear word. Just fyi… Craiglist is another great resource for finding out what’s going on.

A Night of Noise! Support our queer future with SMYRC

I’m just gonna copy in this email I got. Support SMYRC. They are awesome! As a youth, I profited greatly from a group like SMYRC, and I personally know queer and questioning youth who are current SMYRC regulars.

Post-Just Out?

Since the shakedown at Just Out, a crop of queer publications have cropped up or are in the works. OPB recently ran a story about New Queer Media and id Magazine. Unfortunately, even I (the earliest of risers) missed its airing. It aired at 6:50 this morning.  The article on OPB is here.

Too bad QPDX missed the boat.

On a personal note, I hope that Portland is […]
