In case you’re sitting at your desk workin’ for the man but wish you were out in the streets protesting, or just want to see what’s going down… (And yes, the irony is not lost on me that we all have to watch, like, Wal-Mart ads before accessing the video). For more real time updates check out the #OccupyPortland hashtag on Twitter.
The Godmothers of all girl rock bands, June and Jean Millington, are coming to town. Best known for their 60s and 70s group Fanny, these sisters were pioneers…yes, even before the Runaways. They were the first all-woman band to record entire albums for a major label and gain international credibility. Even David Bowie said of them (in Rolling Stone, January, 2000): “They were one of the finest fucking rock […]
In Other Words 18th birthday party – One of the last remaining feminist bookstores in the country is still going. I hesitate to say strong, although metaphorically they’re as strong as ever, because in this economy they are in constant need of our love and help. So don’t let the $12 price tag deter you because IOW is not a whole community center and the party’s bound to be hoppin’ with a lineup of performers and DJs. There will also be a raffle, food, beer and wine. The raffle prizes will feature fabulous items from local businesses, restaurants, the Portland Timbers, food carts, bicycle shops, Bitch Media and more
Sixteen year old Icelandic boy Gabriel returns from a trip to Manchester having had a sexual encounter with another boy. His friends and family all think he’s changed and he struggles to find his identity and ease back into his life as a young man.
From left: Rebecca Cole, Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony and Janet Weiss from Wild Flag
Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, Rebecca Cole and Mary Timony, all members or the “indie-supergroup” Wild Flag go on Minnesota public radio talk about their first album and their current tour, not being a supergroup and the 20th anniversary of the seminal Nirvana grunge album “Nevermind.” This last is my favorite, with Weiss admitting she paid $1.99 to watch the video when 2 days later it was all over MTV.
You can listen to the spot in its entirety below and see video from one of the songs performed, “Short Version.”
Every week we introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.
This week sees newish DJ Kasio Smashio on the eve of her brand spankin’ new night called Deep Cuts which will premiere this Friday the 7th at Rotture. This ally friendly party is co-helmed by earlier DJ of the Week Bruce LaBruiserand features Freddie Fagulaas a guest at the opener. It is for those who want to focus on the music and move beyond top 40. Can I say PDX music snob in the nicest way possible? That’s what I’m envisioning.
When and how did you get started DJing?
I’ve had a passion for finding new music and sharing it with others my whole life. I come from the generation of kids who made mixtapes like their lives depended on it. I would put everything I had into making the perfect mixtape based on what situation it was for. Was it for a crush? A friend? A party? A roadtrip? What kind of roadtrip? I even went so far as to make mixes for my favorite bands that passed through town so they would have something different to listen to on the road.
So, all of us geekoids were glued to our live gdgt feeds today (apparently it was the only one that didn’t crash) to watch the saga of Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” announcement unfold. Now in the several years I’ve been writing this blog I have followed pretty much every excitable Cupertino announcement, but I have never written about any. I figured tech geeks are so all over it there’s no point in coming here. So why now?
I’m not really going to do much of the covering myself. I’ve been inspired by meeting a few other queer tech bloggers so I’m totally going to link to them. Woohoo!
The new CEO of Apple is a big ol’ power gay, Tim Cook. This was his first keynote as CEO. @ouroboring and I even had a conversation on Twitter during the event commenting on those fancy Swatch-esque watch functions for the iPod Nano wherein she said: “@qpdx yeah! now officially endorsed by Tim Cook, Powergay.” So yeah, perfect opportunity to highlight powerful ‘mos, talk fashion, and promote my Twitter feed all at once.
Lyska Mondor (L) and Alley Hector love each other, and you, enough to do a podcast together. Photo by Ally Picard.
I’ve had it in my head for awhile now that I want to start a podcast. I want you to take qPDX with you wherever you go, on your iPod on the bus, whatever.
Maybe I just like the sound of my own voice (metaphorically) but […]
When I arrived in the rainy late afternoon to see PLGFF’s premiere of the German film, and first from Director Sabine Bernardi Romeos, to be released later this year it was not to a packed house. Organizer Gabriel Mendoza didn’t consider it one of the fest’s blockbusters, though he loved the film. Indeed, compared to the line around the block when I left for 7pm’s Weekend, it wasn’t. But it was a triumph. Small it may seem, but every review I’ve read thus far of the film following a young trans man struggling with life and attractions through his transition, has been celebratory, and I wholeheartedly agree.
Another common sentiment I share about the film is that the well-written story is carried off flawlessly by lead actor Rick Okon. Okon plays the 20-year-old Lukas who is “accidentally” put into the female form during his year of German service. He wants desperately to get out and just be one of the guys, even though it is here that he has a Ine (Liv Lisa Fries) an old best friend (former lover?), who is also an out lesbian. In her sexually fluid, but not necessarily trans-inclusive, group of friends, Lukas falls for alpha hottie Fabio (Maximilian Befort).
