Drag is well known for pushing the boundaries of art and fashion in the mainstream but what about within drag itself? The juxtaposition of “beautiful” vs. “monstrous” drag is an idea that the queer and drag communities are exploring from tiny stages to to RuPaul’s Drag Race itself (Sharon Needles, the postergirl for monster drag, is a qPDX fave). This week Portland’s Drag Race focused on monstrous and genderf*ck drag and contributor Lyska Mondor was there to catch the action in photos (below the break).

Portland Drag Race – Our local version of the popular drag star competition returns to Red Cap for its 4th 12 week run. The format will be a bit different. Each week a cash prize to the winner instead of one big prize at the end. So be prepared for some great new talent that was much to busy to commit to the long haul in past seasons.
Queers, Queens and Everything In Between art opening – Gender blending art photographer Dan Ostergren has taken some of the most loved queer portraits in town and this is the night to show them off. To help him celebrate the drag stars, local celesbians and other PDX characters he’s shot is a great 3 set show my up and comers directly below.

Artemis Chase
Along with the return of popular Logo show RuPaul’s Drag Race, returned Portland’s own Drag Race with host Poison Waters earlier this February. The new Red Cap Thursday staple goes for 13 weeks with 8 contestants who will be lead through a variety of creative challenges. One will be chosen the weekly winner, and awarded prizes donated by sponsors and community partners. At the end of the series, one contestant will come out on top to claim the grand prize which includes $1,000.00 cash and round trip airfare, lodging, and VIP party passes for 2.
One of the favored contestants, Artemis Chase, is a much beloved local queen who almost made it onto the national show. But today even her race towards the local championship has ended as she has pulled out of the local competition.
