Übergay Cabaret is back with new pop-drag opera “Jack’s Off the Beanstalk” this Saturday the 9th at Bossanova (722 E Burnside). They’ve been touring Europe, sweetie-dahling, with the act for awhile now but it’s been promised that Jack is reworked and remounted (oui!). And while I haven’t seen this particular production yet, this cabaret got me TKO-ed at thier “Drag up, Known down” last year. I mean who can argue with the sensuality that is buttered carbohydrates and raw naked steak to a struggling Atkins drag queen. I was on the floor laughing and lusting.
Be sure, also, to check out their startup story. It’s über cute…
And now whether you’re and East-ennder or a West-ender, Saturday has a queer party for you on either end of Burnside… […]
What happens when you infuse Madonna with testosterone? Apparently, the new “Mandonna: the all-male all-live tribute.” And they are not your usual flamey boys dressing up for the club, but hairy glam guys faithfully reproducing the songs of the Material Girl for your listening, if not viewing, pleasure. This ain’t no lip-sync to a CD and it ain’t no karaoke. It’s the real (masculine) deal baby. And it’s at the Crystal Ballroom (1332 W Burnside) this Saturday, July 9th at 9p. All ages (yeah for real!) $20 advance, $25 at the door. Local fav Poision Waters will also be in attendance. […]
For all my anti-corporate spewings last week I gave you a rather positive spin on a new network appearing. Mere days later I began to shrink into the floor as it was pointed out to me that, as if television wasn’t shameless enough, the new station has actually sunk to the low of calling itself “Logo.” Corporate sponsors come on in! of course. Better yet, did this criticism come from you my loyal readers? No, it came in my own household…
So I admit it.
I may occasionally be imperfect, hypocritical even. Do I occasionally like to watch trash TV and buy Diesel apparel? Yeah I do. Do I get sucked into pop culture and gay marketing? Sure. Sometimes I have to recoil and get a hold of myself, and other times I think its ok to let yourself have a little fun, or let go of the oppression of perfection and complete social clarity. There may be good things to some of these apparent corporate monsters and other conundrums. So, if I admit to occasionally watching cable, I doubt Logo could be any worse than its siblings MTV and VH1.
No one ever said being queer would be simple did they? […]
Everyone thought yesterday our neighbors would be the third to legalize gay marriage on a national level but in a surprising upset oh-so-Catholic Spain beat ’em to the punch. Only uber-liberal northies The Netherlands and Belgium have come before. But as of April this year a new guy, Zapatero, took a seat on Spain’s top chair, and he has an agenda. That is, he has that same bravery and willingness to put himself on the line for his beliefs that I mentioned yesterday, and only wish we had here. He said this about the new law:
“We were not the first, but I am sure we will not be the last. After us will come many other countries, driven, ladies and gentlemen, by two unstoppable forces: freedom and equality.”

Closer to home, California won a legal battle as well, with a a higher court refusing to repeal a 2003 law giving domestic partners the same rights as married couples in the state. But then again, we all know how well separate but equal has worked in the past… […]
As if I needed another reason to want to move to Canada. It calls to me. Especially after I saw the Canadian anti-Bush website MarryAnAmerican.ca, wherein philanthropic Canadians promise to marry progressive Americans to save them from their country. Well now it appears that you may now be able to nab that same-sex hottie hubby and escape the states at the same time. Canada is on the verge of being only the third country to legalize gay marriage nationally. (The Netherlands and Belgium are the other two). Oh, we often downplay our neighbors to the north, belittling their influence and their population of 30 million and thinking of them as meek little beings hovering in the snow. But Canadas direction is not only forward-thinking, but courageous in a frightening world. Would that we had as much fierceness, instead of our strong, but often base and cowardly muscle. […]
This is just too funny. Brought to you by Jen Lane of Barfly, that awesome little every bar in town magazine that fits in your pocket (except for in those one pair of 80s Jordaches), for those of us without internet on our cell phones.
The third annual Bears v. Drag Queens Dysfunctional Family Feud is today, Wednesday, 6/29, 6-8pm at Ash Street Saloon (225 SW Ash). There’s no cover, free munchies, $2.50 New Deal & Portland 88 Vodka drinks and a trivia contest with fun prizes that anyone can enter. You can also enter to win a great big KEG O’ BEER in our fundraiser raffle ($1 a ticket or $20 for your whole INSEAM!) – all the proceeds will go to the winning team’s charity of choice. The Bears are playing for Friends of People with AIDS, and the Queens are playing for the Audria M. Edwards Scholarship Fund, fyi. If you haven’t seen it, you should know that Dysfunctional Family Feud is BarFly’s take-off on the t.v. show, but our surveys are conducted here online, and live in Portland’s barrooms, so the answers are considerably more slurry and silly and the result is pure entertainment gold. Emcee Cat Daddy will be presiding over the festivities, along with my sweet self!. This is the third year the Queens are taking on the Bears, and the show is always over the top. Come on down for happy hour and you’ll have a blast. You cannot lose!

I heard of the 2 fledgling networks that popped up for the GBLT viewer…but I could never remember their names. I’m guessing most couldn’t. Obscure and pay-per-view, their impact seemed minimal. Now there’s a new channel on the cable block, Logo, and viewers don’t have to request specifically. And the man behind the magic is the very same behind the programming on MTV, VH1 and CMT. Judging by the adictability of “I Love the 80s,” Logo may turn out to be a hit beyond the queer audience.
I may have to break down and get cable…

So yeah, I think The Know has a hit on their hands. That little place with shabby chairs is completely transformed. The dance floor was a bit sparse, but there were folks enough to make a considerable line at the one bathroom. So, I can’t say it will replace Booty as my favorite but it has potential — it is closer to my house… I still haven’t decided whether I like or dislike that the dance floor is separated from the hang out space but it is nice to have some room to move your feet once in awhile instead of Booty’s pure brump and grind. Mondays may have less of a draw than Thursdays but it is reminiscent of the long lost, and missed, Queer Night at La Luna. […]
I heard it was a hot night, temperature and tempers. And while I generally consider myself a pacifist I also understand when its important to fight back. So today’s the day I cheer on those civil-rights champions and high heel lobbing drag queens that, this day in 1969, showed the NYPD that you didn’t have to be wearing the law-required 3 pieces of male atttire, in order to kick some coppers to the curb.
Greenwich Village’s riots at the Stonewall Inn marked the beginning of gay liberation movements and the vast colaitions of queers that have emerged since. It spurred the Pride parades that are now celebrated in June or other months internationally.
In Portland this year, we have an added extravaganza, targeting the Stonewall anniversary specifically. Holocene‘s (1001 SE Morrison) benefit for Basic Rights Oregon sports an impressive lineup including local burlesque queen, Sparkleheart, dress-me-up rockers Fleshtone and a host of wild, pants-shakin’ performers, DJs, fillmakers, artists, and speakers.
Our ancestral rioters would be so proud.
Oh yeah, and as a sidenote. Seems like Howard Dean’s got our backs… […]
So I’ve been meaning to go to this funky little bar and performance space, that sorta wedged its way onto Alberta, forever now. I mean, I stopped in there once in the early early stages when it basically had a table and some free books and videos to borrow. That was pretty interesting in and of itself. But I’ve seen the know ( 2026 NE Alberta) primping and sprucing itself up a lot lately, certainly adding more alcoholic selections are a plus. But now, I hear tell they’re starting a new Monday queer night, this very evening. Time has run out for me. I’ve got to go. Might this be the new Whatever Lounge? R.I.P. Believe me pirate hour, I’ve missed you sorely… […]
