Tonight
Rufus Wainwright with the Oregon Symphony – Portland’s yearly Time Based Art festival is pretty epic and pretty gay in and of itself. But tonight’s opening act is sure to be one of the more memorable musical collaborations. This celebrated male vocalist has had immense success as a pop star but easily scored an entire opera, Prima Donna, as well. On the last stop in his North American tour Wainwright will entries from his latest opera, performed by local soprano Janis Kelly as well as some “classical” Rufus that will showcase the composer’s own vocal range when he sings two concert pieces by French composer Hector Berlioz.
Dirtbag – Jenny Bruso’s Alberta queer non-poppy sweat dance party this week with guest DJ Lick My Battery. It’s real. It’s raw. And it’s damn good.
Friday
Bent – While I’m disappointed in the level of liquor to dollar ratio that has befallen the redone Foggy Notion (3416 N Lombard) space I’m pretty stoked to see what’s in style for the upcoming season. This special fall fashion edition will revel in the skanky hosiery and adornment we have all come to know and so love. And while no one will be turned away for lack of skank you better make at least a few style choices. Because otherwise I won’t be able to see you burnin’ on the dance floor.
Saturday
What’s new in HIV? Annual Conference – Now in it’s 6th year Cascade AIDS Project brings some very important updates from the medical field. In this world of constant fun qPDX inhabits it’s vital to remember to keep ourselves safe and healthy. These panels specifically geared to meet the educational needs of and convey pertinent knowledge to local HIV/AIDS care providers and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are one step in this process.
Portland Summer Showcase at Washington Park – Does anyone remember Peacock in the Park? It was a great Sunday afternoon drag hangover cure that raised money for LGBT scholarships and one of the most fun events I looked forward to as a gay teen. Well traditional host Poison Waters is back to bring in the outdoor talent show. She is joined by Tamra Scanlan, Belinda Carroll, Delaney Andparis, Fannie Mae Darling, Magic Mouth, Leslie Waygren and more. This is a great family friendly event that will also feature artists and vendors. Let’s just hope for a day without rain.
Inferno Dance presents Women in Uniform – A pre-funk party with bite Barracuda’s (9 NW 2nd) Inferno might make chills run down your spine. Is that a lady cop coming to shut down our fun or just a hot costume complete with real handcuffs. Let’s find out…
Sunday
Art Party at TBA – It’s the last one ever. So get your artfag on and wish Sarah G. good times in grad school and Jenny Hoyston a happy b day. There might be even more highbrow art crit happening than usual with the addition of TBA folks, so revel in the exchange and help keep it real.
And, of course, don’t forget the plethora of homos representing at MusicFest NW all weekend long.
