Not too cool for gay friendly school

Following Diva magazine’s study of British Universities, education watchdog The Princeton Review has provided a list of the most gay-friendly Colleges in America.

Now, I know I exhibit some severe bias here but the top 2 appear a bit random to me and the next 3 are just a slap in the face. They’re all around Smith College, the school from whence I graduated. Theyre our rivals. I can’t believe we didn’t make the list. Lesbian experience is a rite of passage and practically a requirement at my alma-mater. Granted, Eugene Lang may be more loosely I’m queer and I don’t care than the possible pre-power-suited lesbians of Smith, but to rank Wellesley, our biggest rival, and then close neighbor Mount Holyoke (who think they’re our rival but really we pretty much ignore) is just wrong.

Sigh. Ok, my little personal indignant snob fest is over now. The reality is that Smith, like any school, does have its problems. I was, myself, was involved in protesting and taking actions against racist and homophobic occurrences on campus. And, of course, the phenomena of the LUG (Lesbian Until Graduation) is rampant in the all-woman atmosphere of Smith (so too of Wellesley and Mount Holyoke). But I do believe Smith was a pretty accepting place, comparatively speaking, for a myriad of queer identities (for example there was a thriving trans community, perhaps surprisingly at a “single sex” school). And from what I’ve heard from close friends on that nearer to Boston campus, quite a bit more queer friendly than that other famous womens institutionOh, yea, but I have lost any faith I once had in the Princeton Review. Let me thinkDid I have any? I mean, local live-and-let-live liberal arts palace, Reed, only made 18th in the list…

Oh my, old people are so cute!

Ok, I do know how patronizing that sounds so please don’t beat me over the head with a stick. I’m sure it wont be so cute when I can’t remember my own name (like Sunday mornings for example). But really, I have always admired the wisdom and acceptance that elderly folks often display. While many have become more conservative as they age I have been introduced to so many that have just seen and lived through it all, nothing surprises them, and are quite liberal and accepting indeed.

Now see, I already exhibit the signs of age as I’ve just embarked on a tangent before I’ve even begun here. The real point of this post to actually to let the older Qs among you know about Elder Resource Alliance’s ’50s Sock Hop and Barbecue Dinner Benefit this Saturday night. ERA Serves lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elders and how better to support them by slurpin’ up some meat (although vegetarian options are available as well, it ain’t a new trend baby) and getting the jitterbug spirit wriggling through your feet. Dinner and dancing begin at the relatively early hour of 5 o’clock as well all know it’ll be well past bedtime by the time the toes stop tapping at 10. Event is held at Station Place Tower (1020 NW 9th Ave at Lovejoy) and is only $10 for 5 hours of fun. Those without Medicare cards in their wallets are also welcome to attend.

No more deadbeat gay "dads"

Along with rights comes responsibility (so so true, point in case being this lovely blog I keep, which hasnt been updated in nearly a week). This was the lesson that 3 lesbian dads learned in California today when the Supreme Court ruled that partners who have kids together and then split up must pay child support no matter the genders of the parents. The implications of this have me applauding: more custodial rights in general for non-birth parents, safer mothers, happier kids, and a sense of equality in responsibility. However, I found a tidbit near the bottom an interesting point. One of the women states that part of her happiness in the decision is that she may be able to get off welfare now. Not that it calls into question my support of such a ruling, but it does call into question the motives of an ever changing, ever shaky, court and government.

Ruining clean-cut gay America with my incessant liberal rants

Bravo Jeff Gannon, for your insightful column. I love how this guy uses the word antiwar in quotes. I love how he calls queer bloggers who dare express an opinion unlike his abusers of technology and media outlets. No matter, of course, that he will, himself, use the clout of a publication to plug his own conservative, self-loathing agenda. By calling into question a government that most certainly does not have the best interests of its gay and lesbian citizens at heart, bloggers like me are, apparently, not only being irresponsible, but ignoring the viewpoint of Americas gay people in general. If gay people (in general) are plagued with internalized homophobia and materialistic conservative longing, I have no wish to reflect or be a part of that.

This guys also all over the place. He condemns gay media for not paying more attention to particularly heinous international news such as the hanging of 2 youths in Iran (despite the fact that there have been protests in London, San Francisco, Dublin, Paris and Montpelier) while downplaying Abu Ghraib as well as anything that happens on our own soil. Believe me, we all know how many battles we have to fight.

A fellow blogger takes what seems like a low blow, calling Gannon a hooker that will sell anything for anything, but the post brings up several good points. However, I have great respect for sex industry workers, some of whom have nothing but the highest morals, and whom I have seen organize and work in activist communities the hardest. So I wouldnt want to denigrate their work by comparing them to this man, for whom I have very little respect.

Tricksy Defense of Marriage coalition

As if we needed another reason to have our talons out for the Defense of Marriage Coalition, it seems they have some reticence over financial disclosure. Tricksy they may be, not not too smart it seems…

Academic film adventures

I should probably add local queer blogger Joshua Gibson to my list of favs, because I read it more and more. The guy pulls no punches and the writing is sharp and witty. Today he highlights a particularly creepy way of jumping into your movie weekend with a queer reading of the horror genre. Completely cerebral and academic and I love it. I’ve been missing this. Maybe I’ll reread my own paper on queering female-fronted blaxploitation films. If you’re a closet entertainment intellectual they both should be satisfying. I’ll give you mine tomorrow.
