A night of fashion and frivolity, Circus Smyrcus and men’s underwear

A couple of really great events almost snuck by our radar! But we queers can roll with the punches so whether part of the younger crew or the “grown-ups” we’ve got lots for you to do tonight.

circus-smyrcusSMYRC hosts its annual Queer and Trans Youth prom tonight, Circus Smyrcus, at the (for now) SMYRC headquarters (2100 SE Belmont). The alcohol and tobacco free event for the Q set between the ages of 14 and 23, takes place tonight from 8 to midnight and will feature the music stylings of DJ Tara, free food and raffle prizes. And unlike your typical suburban high school you don’t need to buy overpriced, couple-centric tickets cuz this party is free.

For the over 21 fashionistas, or, let’s be honest, gawkers, tonight also features a mens underwear fashion show and party at Boxxes/Red Cap (1035 SW Stark). You gotta head down to the fabulous Under U 4 Men panty palace this afternoon in order to get tickets, but they are free and you get to meet designer Andrew Christian from Bravo’s new hit “The Fashion Show.”

Fellow qPDXer Adina Lepp spoke with Christian about the upcoming show in this piece from Just Out:

“I’m basically the king of the underwear world,” proclaimed Andrew Christian, renowned skivvies and sportswear designer, in regards to his self-anointed title. Although he’s been producing urban-inspired menswear, swimwear, edgy tees, and accessories bearing his name since 1997, it is his company’s innovative underwear line that has established him as a force in fashion. Christian’s lines are carried at exclusive boutiques as well as Portland-based Under U 4 Men shops, attracting high profile clients like David Hasselhoff and Dean McDermott.

Besides a clean, bold aesthetic, Christian is devoted to helping men enhance their profiles with underwear and swimwear that gives “maximum frontal enhancement” – otherwise known as a push-up bra for the package. He also offers the Flashback, which provides a similar service for the rear and is available for both men and women. He plans on putting out a women’s line in spring 2010, which made me wonder whether a female “maximum frontal enhancement” product was in the works.

Pictures are promised…

Lastly, just a reminder that there is actually yet another fashion event tonight (2 in 1 night in Portland, really?). But you should all already know about Strut, that benefit for Basic Rights Oregon, right?
