weekend’s almost over…but one big event yet to come!

And it’s time for a little half time recap. (well, technically a 2/3rds time recap, but who cares, right?) It’s been a busy few days indeed!

Thursday saw me hit RedCap for a little update on RuPaul’s drag race, which I have been checking in with since my first review, which you can find here. The Portland edition doesn’t have eliminations, so all the girls were still in the race-and had the task of choreographing a dance number to RuPaul’s own “Supermodel” (yes that super gay dance number from the early 90’s). Overall, both teams did well, but Team Alexis sadly took a wrong turn on the costume front, picking lavender onesies that were not flattering at all. Also, their choreo was messy. I had expected more from Alexis. Team Kelly stole the Lipsynch For Your Life trophy with excellent dresses, makeup, and teamwork. Their choreo was sometimes a little flat, but overall well done. Sable Scities is most definitely the strongest dancer in the group, and stands a strong chance of walking away with the prize of being the Northwest’ Fiercest Drag Queen if she can keep up the pace. A great show, with the usual witty banter between Poison Waters and Byron Beck. Sadly, Isiah from Burlesquire should stick to what he does best (and he really does do it very well) – Dancing. Being a commentator or a judge is not your strong point, Isiah.

Friday saw me hitting a poetic note, going to Dirty Queer at In Other Words. The venue was packed, with 110 attendees being counted. It was another great evening of dirty poetry, prose, and singing- (also, don’t forget there is usually a bootblack in the house so you can get your shoes did!). There were so many people on the signup sheet Sossity was cutting people off. Getting in early, keeping your material sex related and under five minutes is a good way to make sure everyone gets on the list! I got to read a poem I wrote recently, and got such positive feedback afterwards (and at Blo Po). Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and kindness. I’m humbled by it.

Friday was also the second Fruitcake @ Rumpspankers, which sadly none of us made it to because we had a prior commitment. Slow Jamz was the theme though, maybe someone can let us know how it went?

Saturday saw Blow Pony bashing it’s way back into town! Blow Pony has now gone cash only, maybe to shorten the hideously long lines that had a tendency to form? Anyway, it did seem to help, although everyone was struggling to scrounge up enough cash…and there were definitely lines forming at the ATM. This Blow Pony saw sparkles and glitter everywhere, as well as free lollipops! The venue was even more packed than usual (my theory is that it was nice weather, and all the fairies are back from Beltane…) and the music was rockin both downstairs and up. Beautiful people (in conventional and unconventional ways) abounded, we were dancing five minutes after getting there at 10:30, drinks were sometimes incredibly weak and at other times could knock you flat, the downstairs was a hot, sweaty mess of dancing bodies, a sea of queers were causing minor trouble on the street outside, that’s the Blo Po we know and luurve! I’d like to say thank you to Sean the bootblack for being so sweet, too..

Sunday is obviously today, and it’s also mother’s day. So call your mother, or, more kinkily, be a good boy/girl and call your mama. Mothers are what makes the world go round. And then get your queer bent arse in gear and prance over to the Someday Lounge to see the fantastic pdx dance showcase Kick/Ball/ Change. Tickets are $12 at the door. Doors at 7pm, show promptly at 8. Support independent, portland based queer performance. It’s good Karma. GO!
