Film has always tended to push the boundaries of sexuality. We’re finally no longer living (completely) in the celluloid closet so there’s plenty to choose from without having to resort to claiming films like Claire of the Moon. The 90s were tough children…
Heart-wrenching and real, this is the gay indie favorite around the world. Set in a Peruvian seaside town a married fisherman struggles to reconcile his devotion to his male lover within his town’s rigid traditions.
Who knew that Kristen Stewart, the actress that plays the wimpy, distinctly unfeminist Bella in the the Twilight saga could pull off such an amazing rendition of Joan Jett? Teenage rock-‘n’roll and sex of every straight and queer flavor makes you feel a little funny inside…but in a good way.
Older ladies, lesbians, moms even, that are portrayed as hot, smart and nuanced. I may not always be a huge Lisa Cholodenko fan but this tender film about two teenagers, the product of artificial insemination with lesbian moms, who seek out their biological father is genuine and interesting. Lead actresses Julianne Moore and Annette Benning are the perfect MILFs for the job and I even learned something new. Even older dykes watch gay porn…
When a gay literary figure has become popular enough to be played by “so hot and straight I can play any gay character and dress in drag if I want to” James Franco you know someone is smiling upon us nerdy academic queers. It headlined this year’s Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival became the poster child for a new generation of artistic media. This biopic takes a chance embedding animation and using a script pulled directly from the historical record. Not everyone agreed that it was a masterpiece but it was adventurous and compelling enough to be talked about all year long.
It’s one of those films people are apply the campy “tour-de-force” label to. But we are love it for the much talked about and supposedly shocking sex scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Personally, I didn’t think that was the most shocking thing about Black Swan but I do know several folks who have stopped messing with their cuticles.
Who knows how long it will last, I’ve already been seeing this clip pulled from all the more reputable video sources, but in case you’re a big lez that wants to see the sex scene without having to sit through the whole ballet hallucination intensity you can check out the sex scene below.
Honorary mention: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – Not a queer film per se this geek fest featured a female ex that Scott had to battle that was just as badass as any of the boys he fought to win Ramona’s love. And her sexuality wasn’t even a big deal. Plus Scott slept every night with his gay roommate played by Kieren Culkin, who, like all his brothers is cutely, creepily gay looking. Huzzah for mainstream queer nerd normalcy.
