[…] You can’t always be in the mood for sweaty club kids, crazy messed up drag queens and high energy art school music beats. Sometimes you just want a laid back sipping drink surrounded by some pretty ladies. So I commend the Fez Ballroom for creating just such a space with their new “Gimlets and Garters” night starting tonight.
So while I’m always ecstatic to have another chill space for girlies I’m sketpical of this one as it comes off sounding pompous and exclusive. In Portland where any of the old-money recent-seven-sisters-school-graduates are looking to get away from that culture (if they weren’t they would have stayed in Boston or moved to New York) I just don’t think this snooty-ness will fly. […] I know I’ve been a bit lax lately, I won’t give you any excuses, though I have plenty of valid ones…But I know your thirst for gay news is great, so here’s a little Associated Press video action about that semi-skeevy yet kind of normal ex-gov of my birth state New Jersey, Jim McGreevey. Oh drama! […] There’s only 2 or 3 oddballs in this bunch of performers I’d be interested in (see Lesbians on Ecstasy, Erase Errata and Alix Olsen) but I’m betting a lot of you will be quite interested in making the trek to the midwest for the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival in August. Performers have been announced so decide if you’re going for the music, the ladies, or to see the drama with Camp Trans play out. All are very good reasons to be in attendance… […] I realize I’m several days behind at this point but I figured you might want to see the video of conservative maven Ann Coulter calling Presidential candidate John Edwards the f-word. That’s right, I refrain from using it even in my own blog, though I may claim ownership of it in my personal life. Words do have power. That’s why I don’t think it’s ok for me to use that dreaded n-word ever. But Ann, she makes fun of the power of words and then uses it inappropriately anyway. Go you! Besides, John may be a dandy pretty boy, but I don’t actually think he’s gay. What is he, however, is smart (and has a very charming, almost queer, smile to go with those smarts of course) and has set up an anti-Ann fund. So maybe we can let him into our queer club after all? PS No, I don’t know which candidate I’m voting for in the primaries yet. I’m totally disillusioned with politics and kind of wish the first viable African-American and female candidates weren’t going head to head. I get particularly miffed when they really try to get at each other because, inevitably, one is going to have to support the other in the long run…) Remember that when you’re slinging mud kiddies…) But I would love to start a discussion on who the best candidate for LGBT issues is. Email, comment etc. Let me know your thoughts. […] As with a lot in life that is unfair, is our susceptibility to HIV just by chance? Well, even if those with weaker Langerhans cells might have a harder time fighting off HIV, it also means scientists can work with these cells toward some sort of vaccine/cure/prevention-of-some-sort. And even if the cure for AIDS is a long way off I’m not too proud to be hopeful when I hear about a breakthrough such as this. […] Lord knows its tough enough getting a job in this town without having to worry about transitioning or gender issues. (Even gay issues are still tough despite that most employers are fairly queer friendly they’re certainly not required to be and benefits are still just not equal and we all know that.) Even if you’re not trans if you’ve been following Max’s L Word plight you might have some concept of the difficulties of transitioning on the job. And he works in computers, probably one of the less volatile environments. (Remember Damon Woodock, the PDX cop?) Well, I guess New Jersey’s Civil Union bill actually did become law but the good news from the north about Washington’s Civil Unions bill is positive, it passed the Senate and Gov Gregoire is expected to sign it, but it still has the House to go. I was going to leave you with a little clip of one of my favorite Saturday Night Live skits about the gay couple from New Jersey (I was born there and I have a family full of Jersey girls so I’m allowed to make as much fun of Jersey as gay people of course) but neither You Tube nor the official NBC website has the clip. Man, if you’re not going to post it, let other people! That particular Christmas weekend update was hilarious. That said, some of the particulars seem a bit bizarre to me. The Fez’s website calls it a monthly Happy Hour from 6-10p which just seems like an oxymoron to me, being only once a month and staunchly within the dinner/early-going-out hour. It also seems to feel the need to explicitly state an age range. The bottom of the bracket, 21, is apparent, as it is a drinking social hour, but why the 45 year old upper limit? It might be somewhat nice to know that this is geared more at a younger crowd and that you should be going to Vitis Enoteca for the over 37 crowd (ok, I think this restaurant isn’t even in business anymore let alone the over 37 mingling night I seemed to vaguely remember, but that’s exactly my point) but I’ve found that most gay scenes are fairly young anyway, so I wouldn’t think it’d be necessary to specify. Besides, the nights that have become very inclusive of a broad range of ages are actually some of the most successful.
