A little part of Sissyboy is back with a game-show benefit. As part of Just Out’s Diversions:
How do you take something ridiculous and over-the-top and make it more so? The general recipe calls for nasty sassy drag queens, talent shows or 80s game shows. This overwhelming melee of more than you ever expected from American Idol has all three. In a night of Sissyboy-hosted mania, “The Gong Show,” a benefit for Outside In, takes over Rotture (315 SE Third) tomorrow, Friday, April 10th. Doors are at 8 p.m., show at 10 p.m.
Sissyboy’s Linah Cocaine as Tsunami Mommy and the Caedmonster as Cady Rang Duck Dong will play masters of ceremony so celebratory of the humiliation and weirdness of the original game show. (What’s a little ethnic name joking when you’re creating a triumphant return of a classic decade of debauchery?) Along with the guest judges, amateur performers are likely to be shredded by Linah’s claws and tossed out with the low drone of ringing in their tone-deaf ears. But those who don’t hear the resounding gong and score well are eligible for cash and prizes from assorted local businesses.
If talent show fever and the insane emcee ramblings of Tsunami Mommy and Cady Rang Duck Dong aren’t enough, those other brightly colored, dirty-minded drag queens the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will give the rest of us talentless freaks the chance to earn some cash as well with a raffle.
Hip hop-electro band Neapolitan Beard will play a short set and serve as house band during the game show. More musical magic will be provided by DJs Danny Damage, Rude Dudes and Jimme Jamma.
Don’t forget that buried deep within this party of improv, baton-twirling, sparkle motion dance routines and gong ringing, this is all for the kiddies. Outside In serves homeless young people, a huge portion of whom are queer and genderqueer. With a $5-25 sliding scale, you are encouraged to dig deep into your Portland pockets.
A friend of mine just emailed me one of your articles from a while back. I read that one a few more. Really enjoy your blog. Thanks
