USA! USA! USA!

The Women’s World Cup has been going strong for the last three weeks, and the American team has made it to the finals!

While women’s sports rarely get enough attention, the U.S. women rocketed the tournament into the public consciousness with a thrilling victory over Brazil in the quarter finals, highlighted by a beautiful cross from University of Portland alum Megan Rapinoe to Abby Wambach, who headed the ball in for the tying goal.

After dispatching France in the semis, America is ready to take on Japan in the final match. The game is on Sunday 7/17 at 11:45 am. (coverage starts at 11).

In addition to superb play, one thing that makes our team extra-awesome is that the coach, Pia Sundhage, is openly gay! To my knowledge, she’s the only openly gay coach in the tournament, so for her squad to reach the final (and hopefully win!) is all the better.
