Every week we introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.
DJ L Train has an irreverent outlook to getting behind the decks, as you can tell from both her name and her pictures. This laid back and fun attitude serves her well as regular nights at the gayish venues of the P Club and Aalto Lounge. But the Train likes to make some scheduled stops at other party stations such as this Friday’s Deep Cuts, which stars two former DJs of the Week, Bruce LaBruiser and Kasio Smashio.
When and how did you get started DJing?
I had always wanted to be a dj of some sort since I was a kid. Back then I thought the only kind of dj you could be was a radio dj. When I was 25 and living in New York City my friend had a big birthday party and no dj so I collected cd’s and records from friends and played the party. After that I started collecting records and started dj’ing around different clubs and bars in New York and have been dj’ing ever since. I have been doing it 8 years now.
How did you get your DJ name? I live in East Williamsburg and took the L-Train everyday. It was a scene and the butt of hipster jokes so, I just went with the name of the train.
Who are you influences/inspirations? RAC makes the best remixes!!!
Why do you dj? I love music more then most things and I like to share it with people. Music makes the world go round..and dance!
What parties/clubs do you currently DJ? I play at the P-Club twice a month, Aalto Lounge, Holocene. I also play at various private parties or weddings.
What genres of music do you like to play? I mostly like to play dance music..like electronic remixes of indie songs. But, I play pretty much everything..soul, hip hop, Latin music. It really depends on the space and the vibe.
What are some of your current favorite tracks? hmmmm…Love Dagger by Rimer London, Solid Gold by Pictureplane, almost anything from RAC
What do you wish would stop being played out right now? Humpty Dance.
What was your WORST DJ experience? Any where people are bumping into my equipment.
What was your BEST DJ experience? Any where people are stoked about the music and dancing their faces off.
What makes a DJ experience good for you? Same answer as above
What are your main pieces of equipment and your favorite? I use turntables with a mix of vinyl and Serato
What else do you want qPDX to know about you? I see gay people.
