GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) announed their nominees this past week for the 2011 Media Awards. GLAAD gives the awards to honor fair and inclusive media portrayals of the LGBT community. The GLAAD awards bring together leaders and members of the LGBT community,straight allies, media professionals, and celebrities.
Some of the categories include film, TV dramas, comedy series, music, documentary, reality shows, newspaper columnists, outstanding overall newspaper coverage, magazine articles, digital journalism, blogs, New York theater, LA theater, and comic books.
Film nominees include The Kids are All Right, Burlesque, the hilarious and amazing Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Howl, Easy A, and one of my favorite films of the year, Undertow (Contracorriente), which is a beauitful and heartbreaking ghost story/romance set in Peru.
TV drama nominees include “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Brother’s and Sister’s”, “True Blood” and young adult sitcom “Degrassi.”
Comedy series nominees include “Nurse Jackie,” “The United States of Tara,” LGBT favorite “Glee,” and “Modern Family.”
Music nominees include the super fun Scissor Sisters, Chely Wright, and Big Freedia (who gave a booty shakin’ performance here in Portland not too long ago).
The Outstanding Documentary category nominees include 8: The Mormon Proposition, Prodigal Sons, and Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement.
Reality shows include “The Fabulous Beckman Boys,” the notorious “Project Runway,” and TRANsform Me.”
Comic book nominees include “Avengers: Children’s Crusade” by Allan Heinberg, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” by Scott Allie, Brad Metzler, and Joss Whedon, and “X-Factor” by Peter David.
