If you thought it was hard to come out of the closet as gay then you may not know the stigma that can come from proclaiming your love of all things geek. And, just as queers have always had pride in our flair no matter what the mainstream is saying, so to will Fantasy Quest, is a queer weekend of role playing, Dungeons’n’Dragons, fantasy, magic and metal being held in this weekend.
Taking place Friday November 27-29th at the Liberty Hall (311 N. Ivy St) the weekend featuring workshops, art rock and metal bands, and late night fantastical after parties (at The Know 2026 NE Alberta) already has potential attendees scrambling to get into costume and character.
Workshops take place during the day on Saturday and Sunday, are $6, and include such gems as DnD, palm reading and Witchcraft 101. The workshop with the best title, however, goes to Let the MotherF***er Burn: Intro to candle Magic. And though I have always considered myself a card-carrying nerd, I mostly certainly need the demystifying Intro to Role Playing Sunday at 1pm with Dyanne Sekeres and Juanes Collazo.
This workshop is designed to give those who have little to no experience with role playing the knowlegde to start their own dungeons and dragons role playing group. through the course of this workshop you will learn: what role playing is, how to build a character, how to run a game (or dungeon master), how to interprete the langauge of d&d, and how to bring it all together to play one awesome game.
What you might associate less with Sci-Fi/Fantasy culture but that Portland queers integrate with ease is music. Billing itself as mostly metal the 3 nights of bands feature an array of queer math rock, avant-garde electronic, guitar power duos, trios and quartets, some of whom you can hear on the Fantasy Quest music player.
Powered by the ethereal and sweetly robotic voice of Anna Oxygen and the skilled riffs of Northern Swords, featuring Radio Sloan (The Need) night number 1 will be a tough act to follow. Luckily you won’t be let down by Saturday’s lineup including Forsorcerers, a quartet of amazing classic rock/metal from Marci Martinez (Team Dresch, Vegas Beat), Amanda Kelly (Vegas Beat), Dyanne Sekeres (Harum Scarum, Red Herring) and Emily Baker nor Sunday’s harder Palo Verde with Lauren K Newman (LKN) and TJK.
