I may be a few days late announcing October’s GLBT History Month, but a new website dedicated to showcasing our past features one of my absolute favorite historical figures today, Ruth Ellis, so I’m happy to highlight your gay Monday.
Modeled after Black and Women’s History Months, GLBT History Month highlights annually the achievements of 31 gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender Icons—one each day—with a free video, bio, bibliography, downloadable images and other resources.
Today’s black lesbian who lived her life openly for over a 100 years was not an activist at first, she lived to be the oldest, and I would have gone to any of her 1940s house parties in Detroit.
The site also gives tips for students and educators, a resources page, and plenty of fun, educational swag.
Be sure to check back on the 30th, appropriately Halloween prank night, for local filmmaker Gus Van Sant‘s day in the historical spotlight.
What a great idea to have info on a different GLBT activist every day for the month of October. I hope many educators use the materials available to teach their students.
