Ru Paul’s Drag Race – Portland Edition!

Fabulous! Unbeknownst to me, RuPaul’s Drag Race is a pretty big deal—if you’re a Logo subscribin’ Drag Queen lovin’ homo that is- (i’m one of these things, and it doesn’t involve a TV) and I hadn’t even heard of it before. Nevertheless, I DID end up at the Red Cap Garage last Thursday until quite late to witness something I think I’ve never seen before-a Drag Pageant.

For those of you unfamiliar with RuPaul’s Drag Race, it’s a Reality TV show hosted by the legendary RuPaul herself—who is searching for the next drag superstar (Think Priscilla meets American Idol or even Top Chef and you’re almost there) Candidates are evaluated on their style, attitude, skills and overall fierceness.

RuPaul’s Drag Race – Portland Edition mirrors the original show – the Queens are approved or denied by the jury consisting of Byron Beck, Lisa Schroeder other rotating judges-and it’s hosted by the legendary Poison Waters. There were cute interpreters, splits in High Heels, alcohol dripping from the walls, and all Queens got to woo the audience with their own drag creations, as well as their ability to recover from Byron Becks’s scathing criticism. In fact, the always feisty bitching between Poison Waters and Byron Beck proved to be one of the Highlights of the show!

All Queens were great-but sadly only eight of them made it to the next round-among them Sable Scities, who only just turned 21, Roxy Hart, who wore a delightful Tutu, Svetlana (who deserved to stay!) and many more. From Darcelle-circa-2009 to post-drag performance, it’s all here and all interesting, so I look forward to fine-tuned performances, ultra-bitchyness, and an inevitable throwdown between Byron Beck and Poison Waters, who did a fantastic job of hosting the event.

How about a tug of war? With nylons? Bring it on! Meow!

RuPaul’s Drag Race – Portland Edition will be hosted by Poison Waters every Thursday for the next 12 weeks at the Red Cap Garage, 1035 SW Stark St.
