SK on L

Hometown hotties Sleater-Kinney made a surprise appearance on last night’s L Word, singing their harrowing “Jumpers.” Some may have cringed at the indie band’s appearance on the commercial Showtime shock show, but I was glad to see them again taking part in something connected to the queer community. And there was plenty of focus on the more gender ambiguous, unmarried Carrie Brownstein who writhed and hopped around in her usual spastic yet sexy way. The lip close up was particularly enticing.

One can only hope all this promotion may give a boost to the summer’s upcoming Northwest queer musicfest Homo-a-gogo.

Hollywood video

I do try, in general, to support Portland’s more independent video rental outlets such as Videorama or Movie Madness but occasionally laziness or gift certificates will find me at a chain. And in general this town manages to have surprizingly good selections and interesting pierced workers even in the Blockbusters. But the Hollywood video on e. 28th next to the Broadway Freddies is extra special. As I found myself idly wandering the new releases last night I was astounded at the sheer magnitude of gay filmology. It was littered with not only higher profile flicks like High Tension or My Summer of Love but lesbian short film fests, a disturbing looking road trip movie about gay brothers and a college Freshman film foray I had the misfortune of renting called Almost Normal. Every shelf in the store seemed to have at least one same sex situation whether it was classy, schlocky, professional or amateur. It was fun, but a lot to wade through as well. Mostly, it was just a little odd. My guess…a gay manager, recent film studies graduate on a mission. It’s an experiment that may only work here…

Ellen’s Grammy show

After years of asking the sex symbol and gay icon Madonna to be on Ellen Degeneres’ daytime show the italian fireball finally agrees to appear in a Grammy special. Is she being generous because she just won the duel with fellow popstress Mariah Carey? Let’s see wht little lezzie dancing Ellen has to say about it. As her cardboard cutout is also to be in attendance at the music awards show, it should make for plenty of Grammy wrap-up fun.

The Ellen Grammy show will air tomorrow at 4p on CBS channel 6.

Ellen chats backstage at the Grammy rehearsals with U2 lead singer Bono during a shoot for the show.

Tories to push gay candidates

What if this is what it meant to be conservative our country?… Although in some ways it’s a blessing I suppose. I mean, I’m still appalled at Conde Rice.

Goodbye Coretta

The funeral of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife, Coretta Scott King, is taking place now. Her passing is sad, as she was not only a civil rights advocate, but also a staunch supporter of gay rights. I find that especially commendable in light of the unfortunate truth that often religious civil rights leaders interpret their faith as saying that gays are not worthy of the same rights they yearn for themselves. But Coretta was spiritual and supportive. And it is sickening that other Christians would protest her funeral because she is willing to fight for other oppressed peoples.

MTF the in thing for Hollywood

Are bio-actresses jumping on the trans bandwagon? As Felicity Huffman heads toward an Oscar for her role in Transamerica, Catherine Zeta-Jones lands her own role as 60s transsexual cabaret artist April Ashley. Is the US the next tranny-chaser?

Delta and the kiddies

Is this funny or disturbing? I just don’t know…

The movies you really want to see

And so, back to the funny. At first I thought the trailer spoof for the cleverly titled Brokeback to the Future was only moderately amusing, but it’s really grown on me. I do so appreciate some good editing…Also it reminded me of a cute little short made by Kirsten Kuppenbender several years ago that I’ve also always enjoyed called Lesbianage IV. (Be sure to click under the “online cinema” heading to actually view the whole short.) The art of the gay film spoof is alive and well. Is there a satire Academy?

Bar shooter caught

I like to think of this blog as a celebration of queer. And I like to gossip and talk about fun little happenings around town or at least berate homophobic pop culture. But occasionally it is also my job to report truly disturbing and intense news, like the teens in Iran. Yet I haven’t been on top of this story of the young man who weilded a hatchet and opened fire on a gay bar in Massachusetts. Nor can I even begin to understand the fear, hatred and jealousy in someone’s life that would propel them to want to murder people while they are relaxing and enjoying life. The good news is that he has finally been caught. However, the apprending of this disturbed individual did not come easily. Before the suspect was critically wounded he shot both a police officer and the passenger in his car. More details and continuing coverage of this series of horrific incidents can be followed here.

Oscars…bleh

So I promised some sort of update about the Oscars when nominations came out. And so they did, and so did Brokeback Mountain and other gay films get nods, and so it’s all anyone is talking about. But truthfully? I’m completely bored with the all the award show hype by now. It’s like listening to a new song you love until you hate it. So, take a look at the complete list, pray for queer victory and wake me up if Brokeback wins best pic.

What’s with calling nominations nods anyway? Does that statue actually move?
