The Godmothers of all girl rock bands, June and Jean Millington, are coming to town. Best known for their 60s and 70s group Fanny, these sisters were pioneers…yes, even before the Runaways. They were the first all-woman band to record entire albums for a major label and gain international credibility. Even David Bowie said of them (in Rolling Stone, January, 2000): “They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time…They are as important as anyone else who’s ever been, ever.”
And what’s even cooler? They are still rockin’. And you have a chance to see them as part of their “Play Like a Girl” CD release tour when it stops at the historic Star Theater this Saturday the 8th. True Rockin’ Role Models for our times; June also co-Founded and runs Recording Camps for girls at the Institute for the Musical Arts in Massachusetts with her long-time partner, Ann Heckler, to teach and inspire new generations to “Play Like A Girl!”
Ok, so you think it can’t get much better right? Well it can! Because you can see them for FREE if you play to win our ticket giveaway. I have been a jaw-drop fan of Mary Weiss from the Shangri-Las since I was a little kid. A few years back she played at a street fair in Brooklyn. I wore a totally hot custom shirt with the Shangs’ image in day-glo. Of course I wanted her to autograph it, and whipped it off at the press table after the show. I’ll never forget Mary telling me to “Put ‘cher shirt on, girl!”
Joan Jett – need I say more? People who are trying to steal her look = lame. This is what I was thinking at a bar in New York a few years back about the chick in the eyeliner, until she opened her mouth to talk to the bartender and I heard THAT VOICE! Needless to say I stopped glaring.
Great answers folks! I’m going to give y’all one more hour to contribute then announce the winner at 1pm.
And the winner is….
SARAH
Not only were you first to the plate, but anyone who takes their shirt off, be it for an autograph, attention, or 2 win a contest, gets kudos in my book.
I’ll be emailing you details shortly.
