DJ of the Week – Alicious

DJ Alicious

qPDX is starting a new feature! Every week we will introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

First on the docket is DJ Alicious, most known for Crave, Doll House and other Mirage Entertainment productions. You can catch her this Saturday at their Doll House farewell at Hamburger Mary’s.

When and how did you get started DJing?

Music has always been a huge passion of mine.  I used to sit in my bedroom for hours on end as a little kid and craft what I would consider to be the perfect mix tapes!  As I got older, I would be the go to person for music.  In college I hosted many parties and always provided the music.  As for getting started professionally, I officially started deejaying back in February, 2010 for Crave’s “Gold Masquerade Party”.  I have continued to spin for every Crave since then.  It’s so exciting to be a contributing factor in making people dance, smile, and have a good time =)

How did you get your DJ name?

From a fellow well known deejay in Portland, DJ Pipedream (He suggested it and then I took an online vote and it really just stuck =)

What parties/clubs do you currently DJ?

Crave @ Crush Bar and “Doll House” @ Hamburger Mary’s (ed. note — watch out for her soon as Los Angeles area parties when you’re traveling the Left Coast!)

What genres of music do you like to play?

I excel in a wide variety of genres such as Top 40’s, Hip Hop, Electro, Pop, House, 90’s, 80’s, Motown & Disco.  I don’t like to put myself in a box.  I love playing to my crowd’s ear. I always aim to please my fans by keeping them happy and accepting requests that I see appropriate to the overall vibe of the dance floor.

What are some of your current favorite tracks?

Dancing on my own – Robyn (Buzz Junkies Remix)

Let Me – DJ Koo

Hello – Martin Solveig & Dragonette

Look at me now – Chris Brown (So So Def remix)

Ray Ban Vision – A-Trak

In the dark- Dev

Can’t fight this feeling – Junior Caldera

Sex Shooter- (Cahill ft.Nikki Belle remix)

Body Shots- Kaci Battaglia

What planet you on- Bodyrox & Luciana (Deadmau5 remix)

What do you wish would stop being played out right now?

I’m pretty tired of Katy Perry’s music being overplayed, Rolling in the deep by Adele, and Edge of Glory by Gaga.  It’s hard to listen to the radio at all because the stations here are so redundant!

What are your main pieces of equipment and your favorite?

Right now I keep most of my equipment digital.  I can carry all my music to a club on a small flash drive that holds over 2000 songs.  And I plug that into my Numark DDS multi-format dj media player. In simple terms my (“midi controller”).  I pair that up with a simple Numark 5-Channel mixer.

My favorite thing to use right now is actually a software program called “Mixcraft”  which allows me to remix songs while working on music from home.

What else do you want qPDX to know about you?

I am a passionate, ambitious & talented deejay who is driven to continue making big waves in the sounds of music across the west coast!  I am venturing off to West Hollywood to pursue my deejay career and to spread my love for music and making people dance.  I plan to make a big splash in the lesbian scene in Southern California =)  I will be continuing Crave in Portland with my girlfriend MJ on a quarterly basis with our next big event scheduled for NYE!  I want to thank QPDX and the Portland community for supporting me over the past few years.  I am very excited to return.  “It’s not goodbye for this deejay, it’s see you soon!”  xo
