Local filmmaker Gus Van Sant has, no doubt, made it big. But though the native portrays Portland and the Pacific Northwest so elegantly on screen, not all his filming is done here. So for a local film industry that struggles at the best of times it is most certainly welcome news to hear that Van Sant’s next film, Restless, will be filmed here in Oregon.
Restless will begin filming in early November and will take place in Portland and the surrounding areas. The movie’s screenplay is by Jason Lew and it’s based on his stage play “Of Winter and Water Birds.” Portland-based producer David Cress is the film’s executive producer.
Although there is no official word on who will be cast in the film, those gossipers at Entertainment Weekly claim Mia Wasikowska will play the lead.
Wasikowska, who’s perhaps best known as suicidal gymnast Sophie on HBO’s In Treatment, will appear as Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland next year. In Restless, written by first-time screenwriter Jason Lew, Wasikowska will play Annabel Cotton, a terminally ill 16-year-old who falls in love with a death-obsessed teenage boy. Ron Howard and his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard are co-producing the film for Columbia Pictures.
