Dan Savage wants to be Sarah Palin’s gay friend

Sarah Palin

Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has uttered yet another cringe inducing statement. This time it’s that old, trite, “Some of my best friends are [fill in the blank].” In this case, that blank is “gay.” To this she icing on an already controversial cake by calling her “friend’s” sexual orientation a choice:

She’s not my gay friend, she is one of my best friends who happens to have made a choice that isn’t a choice that I have made. But I’m not going to judge people.

And though Palin’s best gay buds don’t really seem all that keen on coming out of the closet, the NW’s outrageous gay sex ed columnist, Dan Savage, has generously offered to befriend the lady.

While the capacity for love and forgiveness can be pretty intense in the queer community I’m sure many of the entries to Savage’s Sarah Palin Gay Video Challenge are more than a little tongue-in-cheek. Savage is pretty cheeky himself, but his video plea to be a part of her tea parties and fairy Facebook friends has a surprising dash of hospitality, genuine feeling and a lack of outright hostility.

Now, perhaps this is a bit naive. Surely Dan and many of us queers are quite angry that Palin would claim to be friends with someone whose rights she actively works to deny. And surely it was a jab when Savage says,

I think Sarah Palin could probably use some gay friends about now. (Right now a gay friend would be telling Palin that Katie Couric is a total bitch.)

But in the grand scheme of things Savage’s sarcastic tone is a real desire to teach the Palin family about healthy sexuality and to introduce them to his happily functioning and fairly traditional nuclear family.
