With the election mere weeks away politics is on everyone’s mind, especially queers, and the California marrying kind as well.
Locally, VoteEquality.org, the online voter’s guide of the Basic Rights Oregon Equality PAC (political action committee), which seeks to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Oregon, has released their candidate endorsements and ballot measure recommendations.
Though I don’t give personal endorsements it’s usually pretty clear where I stand; this is a resource I would tend to trust even above our other local liberal publications. It’s also quite thorough, although since it has given the green light to both city council hopefuls Charles Lewis and Amanda Fritz I’m still at a loss.
The presidential race, however, is just a bit more cut and dry. Local celebrity Carrie Brownstein, of Sleater-Kinney fame, has teamed up with former Portlander filmmaker/writer/performance artist Miranda July to raise money for the Barack Obama campaign. Three short films they made together 8 years ago are being sold for a mere $10 a piece, with 100% of the profits going to the campaign. The films have nothing to do with politics, but America is sure to be better for the arts — and cute girls in indie videos — should Obama take office.
Meanwhile our southerly neighbors are fighting tooth and nail to keep gay marriage legal with the No on Prop 8 campaign. And though Oregonians can’t vote in California we can support, donate and enjoy their hilarious Mac-vs.-PC-inspired ads (below).
