Despite Vancouver, Washington‘s many recent triumphs as a gay and lesbian friendly city, their one gay bar, The NorthBank, will be closed as of this Sunday. Owners Brent and Darrell have sent this letter to the community:
To All of our Friends, Staff, and Community:
It brings us (Brent & Darrell) great sadness to have to inform the community of the likely closure of The Northbank. As many of you know the country is currently in an economic struggle and we have felt this at the bar. With the cost of inventory and overhead rising and low sales we have spent a lot of time reflecting and coming to this decision.
At this point it would take a small financial miracle to keep the doors open. We personally have run out of resources and seem to have no further options.
During the past nine years we have had a lot of struggles, but we have also had the honor & privilege to meet some awesome people, and watch them grow into leaders of the LGBTQ Community. We have also had the privilege to host numerous fundraisers for Martha’s Pantry & Saturday in the Park Pride.
We would like to ask you to join us this weekend for Karaoke on Friday and the final curtain call of the Lipz Cabaret on Saturday. At this point we will then most likely be closed as of Sunday.
We will miss seeing everyone, but are overdue for some much needed rest. We ask that you will continue to your tremendous support of Martha’s Pantry and Saturday in the Park Pride.
With much Love & Sadness,
Brent & Darrell
Thank you!
Oh, noooooesss! & I’m one of those people who just hasn’t had the cash to go very often. Sobs!
So sad to hear of the NorthBank’s closing. With it closes the friendliest bar in Vancouver. I wish Brent and Darrell well and hope they will make a go of it again soon.
