Let the gay summer begin

Local performer Max Voltage makes a fabulous gay nerd

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the swelter of the summer. A season full of rainbows, gaiety, improper picnics, and heat-related debauchery. And though it may be quietly sprinkling outside at the moment, the queers are ready to get the party started.

Besides an abundance of impromptu barbeques that are bound to be happening all across the Eastside this weekend there’s good reason to cross the river for Saturday night’s competing Southeast parties, Holocene’s (1001 SE Morrison) Double Down and Rotture’s (315 SE 3rd Ave) Sluts and Squares.

Double Down brings together the ladies of P-Town and beyond for a hustle that includes everything from Mom jeans to dog collars. It’s a fun reminder of the diversity of Portland dykes and is always packed. Unfortunately, that translates into long bar lines, but at least the metrosexual bartenders are enough eye candy to keep you occupied while you wait.

The slightly edgier and darker Sluts and Squares attracts those queers for whom dress-up and drag, in whatever form, is a way of life. I kind of have a feeling that even those of us that tend to dress on the square end of the spectrum are truly attending the night for its slutty potential. And of course the outfitted dancing…

And while you’re letting your inner party animal out of its cage be sure to keep the camera at ready for Just Out’s annual Amateur Photo Contest. Entries are due Tuesday the 27th in one of five categories: travel, people, pets, environment, abstract.
