The funeral of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife, Coretta Scott King, is taking place now. Her passing is sad, as she was not only a civil rights advocate, but also a staunch supporter of gay rights. I find that especially commendable in light of the unfortunate truth that often religious civil rights leaders interpret their faith as saying that gays are not worthy of the same rights they yearn for themselves. But Coretta was spiritual and supportive. And it is sickening that other Christians would protest her funeral because she is willing to fight for other oppressed peoples.
