Beth Ditto helps count down NYE 2010

Just a quick video snippet from one of the many queer New Years parties last night. The last Fruitcake ever was a roaring success and Beth Ditto was on hand to help the homos ring in the new year. Cheers to organizer DJ Nolita for a continuously fabulous soiree and for use of this video.

Beth Ditto not just my hero

It’s always been apparent to Northwesterners how cool, Beth Ditto, the rock operatic diva of indie queercore sensations The Gossip is. But Ms. Ditto got big props from halfway across the world today when she landed UK magazine NME’s top spot on their annual Cool List. NME’s list purports to know all that rocks in Britain’s mad music scene so it’s especially exciting to see a local queerion beating out such names as Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Gnarls Barkley, and Panic! At The Disco.

Guess I’m not the only one who’s been lost for days, headphones keeping out the world, in the maniacally intense yet smooth beats of their latest album Standing in the Way of Control.

For a complete list of the winners visit Stereogum, because, I really don’t know where to pick up this rag on American shelves…

DJ of the Week — Aurora

DJ Aurora

Every week (or so…) we introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

DJ Aurora is part of a DJ duo called What the F@*K Ever (with DJ Chubby Chaser) starting a new night at Crush Bar (1400 SE Morrison) this Friday aimed at the sexy side of queers (I mean, as if there’s another). It’s called Have a Heart on: Sexxy dance party, and it’s just in time for V Day with go go dancers, lap dances, Valentine candy and all that good stuff.

When and how did you get started DJing?

As a native of Portland OR, I started DJing about two years ago. With my love and passion for music, my good friend Owen (Queer Gothic DJ at Plan B’s night Hive) referred me to DJ Entropy for his night, Bad Music for Good People at Tiger Bar. It was a free range night so I played everything from psychedelic rock to punk to contemporary pop.

Just our yearly take on the best albums and EPs by queer artists this year. We don’t hold back our local bias but it is an international list, and I think Canada might be kicking our asses a li’l this year. […]

DJ of the Week — DJ iLL Camino

Ill Camino

qPDX is starting a new feature! Every week we will introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

This week’s DJ, Ill Camino, basically has parties all the damn but this coming couple weeks are big’uns. Thursday sees the return of the school year at The Cafeteria – Saved by the Bell edition and Saturday will take is all to a world of Bartertown and Mad Max with Mrs. Beyond Thunderdome.

When and how did you get started DJing?

My first gig ever was in my hometown of Salem, in what was the only gay club in town called “the 300 club”. It came about through a friend of mine who totally lied and said I had DJ’ed before. The truth was just that I REEEEALLY loved music. The first queer Portland nights I was involved with were a party called “Movement” – later changed to “Partyline” – at Holocene with Vera Domini and Amber Valentine, and a queer hip hop nite at Berbati’s called “The Boom” with Conrad Loebl, Vera Domini and Kristin Ogata.

How did you get your DJ name?

It was given to me by my BFF Sarah who didn’t like that I was going by “DJ Wesley”. Its great cuz iLL Camino is totally a pun. I love puns.
