Perhaps Showtime is making it easier to say goodbye this final season of Queer as Folk, because the first 2 episodes made my dislike of many characters begin to swell. Michael’s hypocritical and swift descent into the world of the pretentious, upwardly mobile gay men is just sickening, and his interaction with just as huffy and unrelenting Melanie drove me to drink. Teddy is as fake and annoying as ever, with a new attitude and addiction around every corner and even Emmett has a bad haircut. Oh Emmett!
All was saved by the soothing sounds of soulful romanteek at Snatch (see below). Unfortunately, they may just have too much funk for the west coast, but us transplants surely moved to their grooves. And by the time Show Me the Pink got up on stage the rest of the crowd was feeling the vibe. Where else can you hear lyrics that use the words “metrosexual dudes”? Sad to hear they’re on hiatus, but it’s for the happy reason of impending parenthood. Rumor is they’re in the studio anyway… […]
Competing benefits even? Two groups of youngsters need your help on Sunday, so if you’re not feeling the Rock’n’roll Camp for Girls’ show at Holocene (see below) then get your dance and your drink on at the newly expanded Crush (1400 SE Morrison) for “Double Your Pleasure” with Flava Kelly and DJ Anjali. This one’s a benefit for SMYRC (The Sexual Minority Youth Recreation Center). Doors are at 8p with a $5 to whatever-you-got suggested donation. (Hey it’s for the q kiddies so pony up).
Snatch, the monthly “hot homo dance party,” on the other hand, may not be a benefit per se but who says the selfish can’t have a good time? Beisdes, you don’t want to miss Show Me the Pink’s last show in a long long time would you? Live dance music can be tough to come by and the idea that these hometown homos are hanging up their hats for awhile saddens me deeply. Also playing is an all-trans band from SF, Lipstick Conspiracy, and OlyWa’s romanteek, a band with a lead singer who can belt it out like nobody’s bid-ness. DJs Hot Pants and Snow Tiger will continue the beats. Snatch is at it’s usual haunt, the swanky Doug Fir (830 E Burnside) (but oh in the basement baby). Doors at 8, $5.
oh yeah and one more thing. There may be too many events to stay in Sunday night but don’t forget to set your TIVO’s (unless it already knows you’re gay) to record Queer as Folk’s season premier. Or for better social interaction, wait for Monday and head down to Slaughter’s for a group screening. […]
So many birthdays this week! All this candle blowing has got me out of breath.
Ok, so 1981 brought you the birth of MTV, the Smurfs, Portland’s second oldest gay nightclub CC Slaughters, and of course, me. (So, what if Slaughters is a Taurus and I’m Cancer, we’re mere weeks apart and both cusps).
And what better way to celebrate a gay b-day than no cover on a Saturday night at a hoppin’ boy spot? So bust out the jellies and the Jordache that you have to lay on the bed to zip up, and head down to old town.
Saturday May 21st, CC Slaughers, 219 NW Davis, 8pm. […]
First Queer Fetish night the rose city has seen is finally here. Tonight’s the night to bust out the hankies and get your various grooves on because its twice the price to gawk in your streethclothes. DJs Chaotiqueer, Stormy, Puppet, and Nancy Bear will be spinning every Third Friday along with host Splendora.
Tonight, Friday May 20th @Noir (203 SE Grand), late I’m guessing. $3-5 dressed out, $10 if you’ve put in no effort whatsoever. […]
Curve Magazine has discovered that Portland is as cool as we all knew it to be already, and has decided to celebrate their 15 years 12 hours to the north of their offices…all weekend long…there’s so much i don’t know where to begin.
Curvaceous cinema Begin the weekend by curling up in front of the big but cozy screen at NE Portland’s historica Hollywood Theatre (4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd). Curve teams of with Sensory Perceptions, the folks who put on the annual gay and lesbian film fest here. Several films will be shown ranging from documentaries about lesbians working with Brazilian street kids to humorous takes on polyamoury. 7pm, $5.
Wine and a spin around the floor? Saturday’s curve invasion will be another team-up with AfterEllen.com for their 3rd birthday (mere babes in comparison). Should be good grub, free raffle, prizes, goody bags and more. They also urge you to dance, but from what I know of the venue Vitis Enoteca (535 NW 16th at Hoyt), it’s more of a restaurant and it doesn’t appear to have a large amount of space. But hey I like to dance at a club called Porky’s, which is the size of a matchbox, so who am I to judge? 5 bucks cover, 10pm-2am.
Indie All-Stars Perhaps the most exciting portion of Curve’s weekend will be the all day extravaganza of what Portland does best, independent performance. This time Techodyke’s in on the action. A mellower afternoon performance includes Sara Dougher and some spoken word. The evening busts at the seams with scores of burlesque acts, bands, and drag kings including the increasingly popular hometown lads DKPDX. Better still, it’s a benefit for the Rock’n’roll Camp for girls, which makes it all the sweeter.
For a full schedule visit http://www.technodyke.com/curveparty/. Both events are at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison), the early show at 3pm, the evening at 8pm. […]
Becoming yourself often takes cash, especially in this country’s tragically limited healthcare system. But various artistic talents have come together to raise money for a young man that needs it. So this Friday skip happy hour and head to Holocene (1001 SE Morrison) from 5-8pm and decorate your walls and your life with prints, CD’s, jewelry, stuffed animals and plenty of other way-cooler-than-that-Pollock-print-your-mother-got-you local artwork. It’s a silent and relatively inexpensive auction and a good time.

As a quick shout out to new the new OregonLive.com Knitting Blog, I want to let you all know that Mabel’s knitting cafe (which she mentions in today’s post) also has a queer knitting get together. (The overlap in this city truly is amazing). Unfortunately, it was just last Sunday so it won’t be back for another week and a half but I’ll remind you when the time is near. And welcome Shetha!
Queer knitting group meets every other Sunday at 4pm at Mabel’s. […]
Scream Club is what happens when feminism and a queer sensibility drop science on hip hop and electronic music, barely coming up for air in between sick moves out on the floor. And they’re back in P-town this Thursday for the finale of their “Keep it on the dance floor” tour with energetically skilled, skinny-tie-wearing sidekick Joey Casio spitting out nuanced and thoughtful electro-clash.
As the 3 exuberant performers (and at least 2 accompanying dancers) will be hosted by the ever more infamous Booty, there is sure to be a crowd of crazy shakers on the dance floor. My feet will be among them I assure you, and DJ residents Puppet and Stormy will keep everyone jumping even after the show…If you missed Scream Club in town last week (or even if you didn’t), I’m warning you, this time…don’t.
Thursday, May 19th at Porky’s Pub. 835 N Lombard. 10ish? 11ish? […]
The Food and Drug Administration intends to implement a new policy recommending that sperm banks accept no sperm from men who have had sex with men in the last 5 years. Because sperm can be frozen over extended periods of time, banks have consistently tested for HIV and a plethora of other diseases for at least 6 months before use. Nevertheless, the FDA has chosen the rather obvious and stereptypical (if sticky) path of excluding gay men on the basis that they are at a higher HIV risk.
Leland Traiman, director of a clinic in Alameda, CA, that seeks gay sperm donors, had this to say: “Under these rules, a heterosexual man who had unprotected sex with HIV-positive prostitutes would be OK as a donor one year later, but a gay man in a monogamous, safe-sex relationship is not OK unless he’s been celibate for five years.”
John Gibner, of Lambda Legal Defense, on NPR also notes that other high risk HIV groups, such as low-income indoviduals, prison populations, and certain races are not targeted currently by the FDA.

Did you ever read all those ads in college newspapers for smart, pretty egg donors too? The whole thing scares me actually. Every time I got a report card I thought, hmm, now my ova would be worth 3000, now 4, now back to 3… […]
“Disgruntled Mary Gay Cosmetics Lady, Mary Esther Ruth, accidentally unleashes the Apocalypse by opening a tube of lipstick! Will the Sissyboys be able to stop the world from ending before happy hour?” -Sissyboy promotional quote.
Wow. I do appreciate a good theme and what could be better than unlikely, trashy drag queen heros? A recent Just Out article gave Sissyboy 5 Qs on its queerness quotient, its highest rating (matched only by Booty, of course) so be prepared for a raucous, raunchy end of the world this Wednesday night at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison). I assure you, there will be no happy-go-lucky Judy Garlands in this troupe (unless, perhaps, she returns as a zombie).
Joining the boys on stage is rockin’ queercore band about town The Divided. Check out their beautifully simple website at www.thedivided.com. And Sissyboy’s too, of course, at www.sissyboypdx.com. Only then might you begin to have an idea…
Wednesday the 18th. Doors at 9, The divided at 10, Sissyboy at 11. […]
