Gay favorites at MuscFest NW

Former Sleater-Kinney frontwoman Corin Tucker (center) now leads her own band at MFNW this Wednesday night

Portland’s big music festival, MusicFest NW, begins tomorrow spewing hip PDX-approved music of many genres over multiple days. And though the conglomeration of music love and music snobbery come in all flavors, they are gleefully mixed. So I’d like to shed some light on the performers dear to a gay audience you won’t want to miss as you delve into the fray.

Wednesday

Corin Tucker Band at Mississippi Studios

Well loved as a founding member of seminal OlyWa grrl punk band SleaterKinney, Corin Tucker‘s new project takes stage the first night of the fest at Mississippi Studios. Softer and with more poise and maturity Tucker still infuses her singer/songwriter new work with her signature vibrato and sass.

Sugar Town, the latest Queer soul dance night brought to you by DJ Action Slacks, is certainly the sweet spot to be this Thursday night. Baconfest, Bent feat Jeau Breedlove, Mrs HoMotown, Chunky Dunk and and Q Center open house make a summer weekend

Bacon Salt man at last year's Portland Baconfest. 2011 version takes place this Saturday on E Burnside

Thursday

Q center open house – Come say hi to the new Executive Director, Barbara McCullough-Jones while you check out featured art on the history of Portland drag from photographer Greg Pitts.

Kerry Hallet @ Alberta Pub – The pub may be eclipsed by its newer hipster neighbors across the street but it’s still got amazing fries and damn good acoustic music sets, like this one by local Kerry Hallet.

Friday

Bent featuring Jeau Breedlove – This months gay ass dance party up north features the homo hop stylings of Jeau Breedlove. The name will probably get old quickly but I heard the cat at the Queer Music Fest the rhymes are pretty dope.

Beth Ditto performs Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ (video)

here’s a little Monday morning perk-me-up of scantily-clad Beth Ditto performing a cover of Madonna’s iconic Vogue complete with backup dancers. Her own dance routine at the Moscow Miller party ain’t bad and I’m pretty sure that’s hometown DJ hero Beyondadoubt in the booth behind it all.

Portland Pride 2011 Friday events

Legendary sissy bouncers Katey Red (L) with Big Freedia

Full list of Friday night events: https://archive.qpdx.com/events-this-week/2011-06-17/

Get Primped for Pride – A pre-funk where the goal is to get girly before you go out. Sexy beats by RoyGBiv and manicures from Nailed by Ally at the Eclexion Boutique (825 NW Glisan).

T*Party picnic – This family friendly event is actually one of my faves and a perfect mellow beginning to the weekend. Fill your belly with real food before entering the liquid diet phase amongst trans family and allies. There’s nothing cuter than little kiddos in drag, trust me.

Poison Waters & friends Happy Hour show – Another earlier in the day events means you can cram even more Pride into your Friday as legendary drag diva Poison Waters presents sequins, rhinestone’s, feathers and heels and laughs.

Q Center Concert series Pride edition “Hip to be Q” – Forget square, in this town it’s hip to be queer and this all ages event has an incredible lineup that will surely last hours upon hours. So here’s to hoping the kids these days have attention spans long enough to catch performances by singer/songwriter and rock icon Kaia Wilson, stoner drag twinsies ChiChi and Chonga, sexy Rose City Sirens, and flamboyantly dirty Fannie Mae Darling among others.

This latest round introduces four all new flavors bursting with summer fruit and berries, floral blooms, the heat you’ve been craving through winter’s dreary days and one flavor chosen by BCN/PDX Fridays! members to be their favorite flavor over the last year of monthly bacon fairy visits.

Claudia Meza presents New Musics: A Night of Modern Classical and Avant Garde ExplorationExplode Into Color’s Claudia Meza helms this foray into experimental musical hipsterdom. Can queer drummer extraordinaire usher in Portland’s own version of a John Cage era? Tomorrow’s first night of acts including bearded electro-knight Copy, internationally renowned and absurdly prolific sound artist Daniel Menche, and Classical Revolution PDX, who will tackle Philip Glass’ dizzying String Quartet No.5 suggests so.

Cabin Project CD release party – Two experimental music happenings in one night? We are a blessed city. The yearlong “cabin project”  comes together this night to showcase the amazing congregation of cello, synth, drums, banjo, violin, and lots of voices.

Weekend picks, Halloween edition

Fannie Mae Darling in 'Trannysnatchers'

This is the weekend that all the gay ghouls come out of the woodwork for All Hallow’s Eve mayhem. So whether your pleasure is tricks or treats there’s bound to be a party, or 2, for you.

Thursday

Cafeteria, HomoDeluxe and Drop ShopThursday isn’t particularly spooky, although I have no doubts there will be some excellent costumes at “lunch trays and ghoulish gays” themed Cafeteria. Dead lunch ladies? Zombie assistant principals? Vampire cheerleaders?

Friday

Crave‘s Halloween Bash – Sexy undead go go dancers and the chance to show your own go go off with costume prizes in several categories like originality, scariest, sexiest, nerdiest and cutest couple. The featured drink of the night is ‘Monster Punch,’ sweet/sour and strong, and it’s only 2 bucks before 10. Plus VIP passes and incentives for friends makes this the it party for girls.
