Mayor Sam Adams and Portland Police Chief Mike Reese announce safety measures for queer community

Mayor Sam Adams descended into the halls of the Q-Center to announce the newest steps the city and Portland Police are taking to promote safety for the queer community. Joined by Police Chief Mike Reese and Q-Center’s Executive Director Kendall Clawson, this marked another meeting, in the string of many since the events of Memorial day weekend to discuss safety.

Police Chief Mike Reese describes measures the Portland Police will take to increase communication with and safety for the queer community

Adams spoke to measures to increase the involvement of “stakeholders of incidents and stakeholders of the larger community.”

Some of the measure announced by Police Chief Reese include:

– enhanced training for officers

– vigorous reporting and investigative procedures

– a designated officer at the central precinct to act as liaison to the queer community

– better responses, in collaboration with the Q-Center, for victim’s responses

This is the second press conference held at the Q-Center this month, after the announcement of Attorney General’s anonymous hate crime reporting, and next after many events around issues involving safety of the queer community and communication with city officials and police.
